The holidays have come and gone; the gifts have been opened, carols sung, and champagne popped. Whether you’ve already taken down your tree and swept up the confetti from your floor or you’re still in denial that the holidays are over, we are all stepping into the new year together. 2018, ready or not, here we come!
After the excitement of the holidays that carried us through the last few months of the year, January can seem like a bit of a let down. In some ways, this calm after the storm is quite pleasant and relaxing. But when the spirit and festivities of the holiday season aren’t there to warm us up from the below freezing temps, January can seem a bit dull and downright depressing. As an eternal optimist, I see this as a challenge and started brainstorming ways to make January as happy and exciting as possible. Today, I’m sharing some of my ideas for warming up this freezing month!
Turn Your Place Into a Hot Spot
…literally and figuratively! It is way too cold to be running around and bar hopping on Saturday night, but that doesn’t mean you have to totally neglect your social life this month. Turn your place into the hot spot this weekend by hosting a fun night for your friends. Friends, music, drinks, and snacks without the crowds and expensive prices – a total win in my book! The best part about hosting? You don’t even have to step out of your apartment 😉
Get Oscar Ready
Award season is upon us! If you’re like me and haven’t seen many of this year’s top contenders (I do not frequent the movies), now is a great time to get caught up. Like I said, I rarely go to the movies (mostly due to the expense) but when you’re not spending money on $18 rooftop cocktails, you might find a little extra wiggle room in your budget to splurge on a movie ticket. Besides entertainment, Oscar contenders also serve greater cultural purposes and can lead to great discussion among friends, family, and coworkers. Plus, nothing makes me smile like the smell of buttery movie-theater popcorn 🙂
Fast-Forward Spring Cleaning
Okaaay…maybe it’s a bit of a stretch to put this in the “fun and exciting” category, but a good clean out is truly the best feeling. Whether it’s your closet, desk, kitchen cabinets, or dresser drawers that could use some extra attention, use this fresh start as an opportunity to give your messes a little TLC. Not only does it feel great to clean and organize, but next time you’re heading out into the cold and can easily locate your favorite pair of boots and warmest gloves, you will be so grateful for all of your hard work!
Spread the Love
Sometimes the best way to bring warmth into the world is to give love. There are so many ways to get involved in our communities and spend our time and energy giving to others. Volunteering is definitely something I’ve neglected since moving to New York, but I want to make it a priority this year. If any New Yorkers out there have suggestions for ways to get involved and serve the community, please let me know!
